California Pair Arrested For Alleged Elder Abuse

Mar 18, 2014

A 30-year old man and 29-year old woman have been arrested for suspected elder abuse among other offenses.

Police were shocked to find not only drugs and drug paraphernalia in the home of Jory Thompson and Sarina Shafer, but a fragile and bedridden elderly man. It is not known how the man, whose name and other information have not been disclosed, is related to either suspect – if at all. After he was found he was taken to Tulare County Adult Protective Services where his condition was assessed.

This strange and disturbing case highlights how alarmingly easy it is for abuse and neglect to slip under the radar, completely undetected.

For months or even years on end, elderly people can be held against their will, made victims by abusers who more often than not, they know well. It is especially important therefore to stay vigilant if you know of an elderly person living in your community. Checking in on elderly friends or relatives could mean the difference between a neglect and abuse case coming to light or not.
