Man Found Guilty of Neglect in Elder Abuse Case
A 53-year old man has been found guilty of elder abuse and theft against a 66-year old man in Davis County, California.
53-year old James Mattos was working as the in-home caregiver for the developmentally disabled Cecil Wachholtz when the Davis Fire Department found the man on a bare mattress dressed in only a dirty adult diaper in October 2012. They rushed the elderly man to Sutter Davis Hospital with horrendous injuries including severe malnourishment, dehydration and hypothermia, with a body temperature of 86 degrees. Wachholtz was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital and never regained consciousness, dying there 15 days later.
Wachholtz was emaciated and suffered with deep bedsores. The mobile home where he lived was covered in animal feces and garbage. It was clear that he was neglected.
Mattos was receiving $2,500 a month to provide medical care, food and shelter for Wachholtz but authorities said that Mattos had not taken the man to the doctors since 2008. He has been found guilty of second hand murder and could face 37 years to life in prison.
