Nine People Charged in Long Island Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Case

Two more people have been arrested this week making a total of nine employees from one Long Island nursing home who have all pleaded not guilty to charges of elder abuse following the 2012 death of a resident.

72-year-old Aurelia Rios was a patient at the Medford Multicare Center for Living where she was being rehabilitated. She died after care workers failed to connect the ventilator she needed to sleep at night resulting in a lack of oxygen.

Allegations have emerged that dangerous cutbacks were made resulting in poor standards in the home’s quality of care leading up to the incident. Staff are accused of ignoring an alarm for more than two hours before Rios was found dead.
