Nursing Manager Struck Off After Insufficiently Investigating Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Reports

Feb 25, 2014

Nursing home abuse is sadly a global epidemic, with stories emerging on a regular basis highlighting how more and more residents have been made into victims by being neglected or abused.

In these homes, members of staff are put in positions of trust by elderly residents’ families, but time and time again this trust is being broken. From janitorial staff, to nurse’s aides, to managerial staff, the levels of responsibility are great, but the levels of care are so often inadequate.

In Northern Ireland a case has emerged of a nursing manager who has been fired after she failed to investigate abuse allegations against 5 residents at the Cherry Tree House nursing home in the county of Antrim. Katherine McCall who was in charge of the nursing staff at the home worked there for 4 years between 2007 and 2011, where in this time it is alleged that she allowed the neglect of up to 5 residents to take place.

A whistleblower at the nursing home came forward to tell the Nursing and Midwifery Council that as nursing manager, McCall had a responsibility to report and fully investigate all claims, but evidence showed that she has not properly investigated at least 5 incidents.

She has been found to have brought the nursing profession into disrepute. Subsequently, these claims do nothing to reassure families who are considering a nursing home for their loved one.

Professionalism, compassion and high levels of training should be important factors when deciding on a nursing home for a loved one. Instead, as this story suggests, even those high up in the system are failing families in keeping their loved ones safe. If a manager or supervisor level member of staff who oversees the running of a nursing home, cannot be trusted in their role, then the risk of further abuse and neglect is high. At Brown Wharton & Brothers Nursing Home Law Firm we are dedicated in representing your case to bring those in the wrong to justice.
