Man Held on $4M Bail Following Allegations of Nursing Home Abuse

Jul 29, 2014

A man who allegedly befriended an elderly woman in a church has been arrested for abusing the same woman in Portland, Oregon.

59-year-old Richard D. Vandenberg first met his elderly victim at a church in the city according to Portland police. He then began abusing her in the nursing home where she was resident. Neither the nursing home or the church have been named as the investigations continue.

The 73-year-old woman, who is mentally incapacitated, was allegedly raped by Vandenberg and abused over a four month period between May and August 2013. Vandenberg, who does not work at the nursing home in question, has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree sexual abuse amongst other offenses. He is in police custody.

Quick-thinking staff at the nursing home notified the police department and senior management when they became suspicious that something was amiss.
