Woman Charged With Elder Abuse After Biting Her Own Mother

Aug 12, 2014

A State College, Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to 60 days in prison and ordered to pay $11,000 in restitution after being found guilty of elder abuse charges against her own mother.

54-year-old Paula Zuchowski pleaded guilty to simple assault after abusing her 93-year old mother. On two separate occasion Zuchowski left her mother with bruises and crying out for help. Both incidents occurred in 2013.

The first case emerged after Zuchowski got angry when her mother was standing at the top of the stairs in the home they shared and refused to let go of the handrail. Zuchowski bit her mother leaving a bruise that lasted for days.

During the second incident Zuchowski left her mother bleeding from cuts and bruises all over her body. Zuchowski dragged her mother from the basement up the stairs to the kitchen, placing her in an office chair. She was then placed in a stair lift, installed in the home to take the elderly lady upstairs to the bathroom. When she fell from the stair lift Zuchowski dragged her mother the rest of the way leaving a trail of blood behind.

The majority of elderly people that are abused are done so by a relative or someone else that they know well. Elderly people place a great deal of trust in family members and friends when they are vulnerable. Sadly across the US many people take advantage of that trust.
